Our Honoree

ed at podeumEdward Thompson is the Vice-President for Advancement at Molloy College, responsible for all fundraising, marketing and government relations activities. Since coming to Molloy in 1998 as one of the youngest senior college administrators in the country, Ed has spearheaded a fundraising and marketing transformation at the College.

Ed is currently directing the College’s first successful capital campaign, having raised $16,000,000 – far exceeding the campaign goals. During the campaign, Ed’s leadership has led to the largest corporate gift, the largest alumni gift, the largest foundation gift and the largest government grant in the school’s history. Ed leads a robust marketing effort that has significantly raised the institution’s public profile in recent years. He and Molloy President Drew Bogner co-founded the Energeia Partnership, the Academy for Regional Stewardship at Molloy College This year marks Ed’s 15th anniversary as Chair of the Board of the Neighborhood Network. Ed’s “career” actually began at the Neighborhood Network working on the telephone outreach staff in order to help put himself through law school. After graduation, he served as staff attorney and was involved in some of the Network’s early legal and legislative victories Ed also serves on the board of Vision Long Island, a smart growth advocacy group, the Board of the Energeia Partnership, and the advisory board on the Institute for Interfaith Dialogue at Molloy College.

Ed received his B.A. in History and Economics at the College of the Holy Cross and his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law. He studied comparative law at the London School of Economics and completed the Institute for Educational Management program at the Harvard University School of Education. He lives in Ft. Salonga with his wife Eloise, and sons Peter and Daniel.

In 2008 the Neighborhood Network is enjoying a series of profound program successes and press recognition.

As a result of our Energy Star Homes Campaign, more than half of the 13 Long Island towns have now adopted higher energy efficiency standards for new home construction. If every town on Long Island adopts these measures, the emission of 371,000 tons of greenhouse gases will be avoided, and between $100 million and $200 million would be saved in the local economy. We intend to get all 13 towns on board and to make Long Island a national leader in energy efficient home building.

This initiative grew out of the work with municipalities that have been participating in our Clean Energy Leadership Task Force , a project that works with local governments to help them lead by example – by renovating government facilities and fleets with clean energy improvements.

The Long Island Interfaith Environment Network has also expanded faster than could have been expected. Program director, Beth Fiteni, started meeting with a few representatives of places of worship in the fall of 2006, and the second annual seminar on “Energy Efficiency for Religious Congregations” drew more than 100 participants.

Our public education campaigns teach thousands of Long Island residents about environmentally preferable choices they can make in their own homes. For 15 years, we have compiled and distributed a list of landscapers who can provide 100% organic services.

We invite you to come join us at our Gala 2008, to help celebrate these and our many other achievements. With your support, you will help ensure the Neighborhood Network continues to be here every day to promote environmental awareness and develop innovative, proactive strategies to protect Long Island.
